Finding Business Class reward seats to the USA with Qantas Points can feel almost impossible sometimes.
You search Sydney to Los Angeles.
Nothing.
You search Melbourne to Dallas.
Nothing.
You search Brisbane to San Francisco.
Still nothing.
And after a while, it starts to feel like there are no Business Class Classic Reward seats to the USA at all.
There's two problems here...
The first is those rare direct flights get snapped up in hours (sometimes minutes) and unless you're super quick or get alerted from inside The Points Hub you'll probably miss them!
But the second problem is, most people are searching too narrowly.
They only search the obvious direct routes from Australia to the USA, and when those flights don’t appear, they assume there is no availability.
But one of the easiest ways to unlock more USA Business Class reward seats is to expand your search through nearby gateway cities like Auckland and Nadi, Fiji.
This one change can take you from only seeing a handful of direct flights to seeing multiple pages of possible reward seat options.
The Problem With Searching Direct Flights Only
Most people searching for USA reward seats with Qantas Points start with one route.
Usually something like:
Sydney to Los Angeles
Or:
Melbourne to Dallas
Or:
Brisbane to San Francisco
And if nothing shows up, they stop searching.
The issue is that direct Business Class reward seats from Australia to the USA are some of the most competitive seats in the entire Qantas Frequent Flyer program.
Everyone wants them.
Everyone is searching for them.
And when they appear, they can disappear quickly.
So if you are only searching direct flights from Australia, you are limiting yourself to the most obvious and most competitive routes.
The issue is almost everyone with Qantas Points are located in Australia meaning that is where most of the demand is so unless you're an absolute sniper or have access to The Points Hub (my dedicated group to helping Aussies find these type of flights), chances are you won't find the seats you're after!
The Hack: Search Via Auckland and Nadi
The two key gateway cities worth checking are:
Auckland (AKL)
Nadi, Fiji (NAN)
These cities can open up extra route combinations to the USA that many Australians completely miss.
Instead of only searching:
Sydney to Los Angeles
You can search routes like:
Sydney to Los Angeles (Via Nadi)
Sydney to Vancouver (Via Nadi)
Sydney to San Francisco (Via Nadi)
You can also take it one step further and search directly from:
Auckland to New York
Nadi to Los Angeles
Then you can work out how to get yourself to Auckland or Nadi separately.
This could be with a cheap cash fare, Qantas Points, Velocity Points, or another positioning flight.
The Availability Difference Can Be Massive
Right now, there may only be a small number of direct Business Class Classic Reward flights available to the USA with Qantas Points.
For example, you might search direct flights and only find a few options.
But when you untick direct flights and allow non-direct routes through Auckland or Nadi, the results can expand significantly.
Instead of only seeing a few direct flights, you may suddenly see four or five pages worth of availability.
And with reward seats, more route options usually means more chances to actually find something bookable.
Don’t Just Search Sydney to Los Angeles
The other big mistake people make is only searching one USA destination.
Most people search something like:
Sydney to Los Angeles
And if nothing appears, they assume there are no Business Class reward seats to the USA.
But that is far too narrow.
Instead of only searching SYD to LAX, you want to open up both sides of the search.
That means searching multiple departure cities and multiple arrival cities.
Instead of only searching:
Sydney → Los Angeles
You could search:
Auckland, Nadi, Brisbane, Melbourne or Sydney → Los Angeles, Dallas, San Francisco, Honolulu or New York
Or in airport codes:
AKL, NAN, BNE, MEL, SYD → LAX, DFW, SFO, HNL & JFK
That one change massively increases the number of possible route combinations.
From One Search to 25+ Route Combinations
If you only search:
SYD → LAX
You are relying on one specific route having Business Class reward availability.
But if you expand the search to multiple departure and arrival cities, you now have far more combinations.
For example:
SYD → LAX
SYD → DFW
SYD → SFO
SYD → HNL
SYD → JFK
MEL → LAX
MEL → DFW
MEL → SFO
MEL → HNL
MEL → JFK
BNE → LAX
BNE → DFW
BNE → SFO
BNE → HNL
BNE → JFK
AKL → LAX
AKL → DFW
AKL → SFO
AKL → HNL
AKL → JFK
NAN → LAX
NAN → DFW
NAN → SFO
NAN → HNL
NAN → JFK
Now you are not searching one route.
You are searching an entire reward seat network.
That is exactly how you uncover seats that most people miss.
What to Watch Out For
This strategy opens up way more reward seats — but in an ideal world, you'd still grab a direct business class flight. A stopover in Fiji or Auckland is a bit of a hassle, so always try direct first.
The good news: direct flights pop up almost every day across random dates. The bad news: they get snapped up in hours (sometimes minutes)!
Every day inside The Points Hub I find these rare flights and share them with my members before they're gone. I've helped hundreds of people fly business class — if you want direct access to me for booking help and questions, you can join us in The Points Hub here.
Final Thoughts
Flying Business Class to the USA with Qantas Points is still possible.
But if you only search direct flights from Australia to Los Angeles, you are making the search much harder than it needs to be.
By opening up your search to include Auckland, Nadi, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney on the departure side, and Los Angeles, Dallas, San Francisco, Honolulu and New York on the arrival side, you massively increase your chances of finding Business Class Classic Reward availability.
