Why You Keep Missing Business Class Reward Seats to Europe (and How to Stop)

You snooze, you lose.

Seats to Europe show up for your dates, then vanish within an hour. Here's the "10 flights" trap that catches people out, and how to book before they go.

By Bryce, Founder of Escape of the Week

Business Class reward seats to Europe do pop up for the dates people want. Most people still miss them. It's usually not because they don't have enough Qantas Points. It's because they weren't ready, or they waited for a "perfect" flight that never came. On peak dates, a good seat can be there at 8am and gone by 9am.

Here's what's really going on when you see a list of reward seats, the trap that catches most people out, and how to stop missing the seats you've been waiting for.

The "10 flights to Europe" trap

Recently we spotted what looked like a big drop of Business Class reward seats out of Adelaide. The search results showed seats to:

  • London
  • Helsinki
  • Stockholm
  • Frankfurt
  • Copenhagen
  • Oslo
  • Vienna

It looks like heaps of choice. Ten different ways to get to Europe in Business Class. Plenty of time to think about it, right?

Wrong. Look at the first flight on every one of those results. They all start on the same Adelaide to Dubai flight. Every city on that list is just a different connection after Dubai.

Why they all disappear at once

A reward booking needs a reward seat on every flight in the trip. So if there's one Business Class reward seat on that Adelaide to Dubai flight, it can only be used once.

The moment someone books Adelaide to Frankfurt, that Dubai seat is taken. Adelaide to London disappears. So does Copenhagen, Oslo, Vienna and every other city that relied on it.

This is where people get caught. They think, "There are 10 options. If one goes, I'll just grab another one." But it doesn't work like that. One booking can wipe out the whole list.

Next time you see a long list of reward seats, check the first flight on each. If they're all sharing the same flight, you're not looking at 10 seats. You're looking at one.

Reward seats on peak dates go fast

Business Class reward seats to Europe are some of the most wanted seats there are, especially around school holidays, Christmas and the European summer. When seats drop on those dates, plenty of other people are watching too.

We've seen seats on popular dates show up in the morning and be gone within an hour. If you need a day to "have a think", the seat probably won't be there when you come back.

That doesn't mean you need to panic. It means you need to decide before the seats drop, not after.

The real reason people miss out: waiting for perfect

This is the big one. Say you've been looking for Sydney to London in Business Class. Then one of these pops up:

  • Sydney to Amsterdam instead of London
  • Adelaide to London instead of Sydney
  • The right route, but a day or two off your ideal date

It's not perfect. So you think, "Hmm, I really wanted Sydney to London. Maybe I'll hold off and see if those seats come up."

And then it's gone. And the perfect seats never come.

Here's how I think about it. A trip to Europe is close to 24 hours in the air. If a seat gets you that whole trip lying flat in Business Class, a one-hour flight to Adelaide or Melbourne to get to it is nothing. Neither is a cheap train from Amsterdam to London. Don't lose the big win over the small bit that isn't quite right.

How to stop missing reward seats

1. Decide what "good enough" looks like before you search

Write it down now. Which departure cities would you happily fly from? Which European cities would you land in? How many days either side of your ideal date can you move? When a seat drops, you're just checking it against your list, not starting from scratch.

2. Have your points ready

Make sure the points are sitting in the account that's booking. If you need to transfer points from a family member or another program first, sort it out early. Transfers can take time, and seats don't wait.

3. Know how many seats you need

Travelling as a couple or a family? You need that many reward seats on every flight in the trip, including the shared first flight. Two seats to London and one seat to Dubai is really one seat.

4. Be flexible on the start and the finish

The long-haul flight is the hard part. Getting to Adelaide, Melbourne or Brisbane, or from Amsterdam to London, is usually easy and cheap. Be fussy about the long flight and relaxed about the short ones.

5. Book first, fine-tune later

If a seat ticks your "good enough" list, book it. Then keep watching. If something better comes up, you can look at changing. Check the change and cancellation fees first so you know what that would cost.

FAQs

Why do Qantas reward seats disappear so quickly?

There are only a small number of reward seats on each flight, and lots of people are hunting for them. On peak dates to Europe, they can be booked within an hour of showing up.

If I see 10 reward flights to Europe, are there really 10 flights?

Not always. Many results share the same first flight, like Adelaide to Dubai. If that first flight has one reward seat, booking any of the results uses it up, and the rest disappear too.

Is it worth flying from another city to get a Business Class reward seat?

Usually, yes. A short domestic flight to Adelaide or Melbourne is a small cost next to a long-haul trip in Business Class. Waiting for the perfect departure city is one of the most common ways people miss out.

How do I find Business Class reward seats to Europe?

Search often, be flexible on dates and cities, and be ready to book quickly. Our guide on how to find Qantas reward seats walks through it step by step.

Get the seats before everyone else

The hardest part is knowing when the seats drop. In The Points Hub, we search for Business Class reward seats bookable with Qantas Points every day and share the best ones with the points and taxes. You find out while the seats are still there, not after they're gone.
