Something very strange is happening over at Singapore Airlines β and it has KrisFlyer members scratching their heads. π€
This week, members started noticing they could no longer search for award seats on the KrisFlyer website unless they already had miles sitting in their account. No miles, no search. And that turns the whole way you book reward flights completely on its head.
So what actually changed?
Until now, anyone could open a free KrisFlyer account and immediately start searching for reward seats β no miles required. It's how you'd check whether the flight you wanted was even available before deciding to transfer any points across.
As of this week, that appears to be gone. Reports suggest you now need a minimum balance (around 1,000 miles) in your account just to run a search. To make it more confusing, some members say they still can't search even with a 1,000+ balance β hinting there may also be some kind of "account activity" requirement layered on top.
Singapore Airlines hasn't officially explained the change, so for now nobody really knows the exact rules.
Why this is so bizarre
Here's the problem, and it's a big one.
The normal, sensible order of doing things is: search first, confirm the seat is there, THEN transfer your points. Points transfers from banks and Amex are almost always one-way and irreversible β once your points land in KrisFlyer as miles, there's no getting them back out.
This change flips that around. It's effectively asking members to transfer points in blindly, and only then get to see whether the reward seats they wanted actually exist. If the seats aren't there? Tough luck β your points are now stuck as KrisFlyer miles whether you like it or not.
That's a genuinely terrible deal for members, and it's hard to see who it's supposed to benefit. My honest hope is that this is a temporary bug in their system rather than a deliberate new change.
Is there a workaround?
For now, a couple of things seem to still work for some users:
πΉ Try the Singapore Airlines mobile app β several members report searches are still working there (with a 1,000+ mile balance), even when the website blocks them.
πΉ Keep a small buffer of miles in your KrisFlyer account so you're above the threshold if you need to search in a hurry.
But these are band-aids. Until Singapore Airlines clarifies what's going on, treat KrisFlyer searches with caution and be hesitant to transfer a single point until you've confirmed availability.
